"The Apothecary's Daughter",
By Julie Klassen, published by Bethany House.
"Lily Haswell remembers everything -- whether she wants to, or not..."
So begins the description on the back cover of this book blending romance, family drama, and fascinating historical detail in a mystery of sorts about Lily's mother's disappearance.
National reviewers say author Klassen has captured Austen and Bronte and it's a lovely story filled with warmth, authenticity and great joy.
What do you think? Let's discuss it! I can't wait to add your comments! Please use the response form below to add your thoughts to the discussion!
1. What does the opening quotation, "Providence has made the most useful things most common, and for that reason we neglect them," mean to you?
"To me, it
means that so many of us are so used to having our basic needs met: the
air we breathe, the food we eat, ways to keep warm on a cold day or get
cooler on a hot day, that we take them for granted. We don't appreciate
how miraculous it is that we have what we need, or that God gave us
pretty flowers to look at or smell."
J., California
2. When is it easy for you to neglect "the most useful things" in life? What distracts you from your priorities?
"It's
easy to neglect what's so important, such as my child's smile or taking
enough time to read my bible, when I get so busy or stressed, sometimes
with things that aren't really necessary that I should even forget
doing so I'm not too distracted to appreciate all of God's sweet
blessings He has given me."
J., California
3.
What surprised you about the apothecaries in the early 1800's? How are
apothecaries similar to and different from today's physicians,
pharmacists, and herbalists?
4.
Did you grow up "missing" someone in your life? (mother, father,
sister, brother, grandparent, etc.)? Did you find ways to fill this
void?
"I
grew up since the age of 14 missing my sister, who died unexpectedly at
the age of 10. It was horrible. I started "overachieving" and keeping
busy studying to the excess (the only benefit was I ended up doing
great in college.) But the only thing that I should have really done to
fill the void was ask for God's help in surviving this sad occurence. I
wish I could have grown closer to God back then, instead of years
later."
J., California
5.
Mary suffered from epilepsy. Do you know anything about epilepsy or
anyone afflicated with it? How has public opinion about this condition
changed since the 1800's?
6. Charles Haswell was too proud to ask for help. Do you ever struggle to reach out in times of need?
"I've
always had trouble with this. I used to be the one people came to for
help, not vice versa. Now I'm trying to learn to reach out to God first
and find a close friend I can feel able to reach out to without
"bothering" her. I'd love to hear how others are doing this."
J., California
7. Do you want to know about what happened to Lilly's mother, or are you satisfied?
8.
Have you ever been guilty of wanting something (or someone) only when
you cannot have it (or him or her)? Have you ever had to lose something
before you appreciated its worth?
9. If you had a memory like Lilly's what would you want to memorize or remember?
"I
would just love to be able to memorize the entire bible, verse by
verse, so that I could have it in my head to use whenever I am in any
situation! Wouldn't that be marvelous?"
J., California
10. Which of Lilly's suitors did you most like? Did she choose as you would have, and why?
